INTRODUCTION - If you're interested in learning what it's like to work in a particular occupation, then this department can provide you with answers. By following the hyperlinks below you will gain access to a government sponsored website where detailed profiles on 250+ occupations currently found in the American workplace are available for your viewing.

INTENDED USE - These profiles are of particular value if you are a career planner or job changer who desires detailed information about various occupations - information that can help you explore and compare occupations to determine which career direction may be best for you to pursue. These profiles are also useful to high school and college students exploring career options, adults in career transition, and career guidance professionals in need of occupational information to aid clients in career decision-making and planning.

DATA SOURCE - The occupational profiles are produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a division of the U.S. Department of Labor and published every two years in a publication entitled The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). The data accessible at the BLS website is from the latest edition of the OOH. The OOH is considered by most career guidance experts to be one of the best sources of occupational information available today.

INFORMATION AVAILABLE - For each of the 250+ occupational profiles, you can obtain the following information:

  • Occupational Title
  • Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) number
  • Nature of the Work (job description)
  • Working Conditions (daily pros and cons)
  • Employment Opportunities
  • Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement
  • Job Outlook
  • Earnings (salary)
  • Related Occupations
  • Sources of Additional Information
HOW TO FIND THE PROFILE YOU WANT - Four search methods exist to help you obtain the occupational profile you desire. You may search the OOH by keyword, alphabetical title, occupational cluster, or industry cluster. Please read the four descriptions below before selecting an option. While the keyword option is usually most effective, you may need to use the other three methods to find the profile you desire.

By Keyword

Click here to jump to the keyword section of the BLS website. Then type in a keyword that represents the kind of occupation for which you wish to obtain a profile. For example, if you're interested in learning more about teaching occupations, you could use the keyword "teacher" or "teaching."

By Alphabetical Title

Click here to jump to the alphabetical listing section of the BLS website. Then click on the alphabetical letter that represents the first letter of the occupation for which you wish to obtain a profile. For example, if you're looking for information on "Medical Transcriptionists," click on the letter "M." Then scroll through the list until you find the desired occupation.
