The Easy 10 Step Job Hunting Guide

STEP 5 - ORGANIZE A SUPPORT GROUP

Few people would argue the fact that a team of people all dedicated to the same goal can 9 times out of 10 be more successful at reaching that goal than any one individual alone who is attempting to achieve the same goal. So, why undertake a job search all by yourself when there is strength in numbers?

It is recommended that you pull together an informal “support team,” of people (friends, relatives, business associates, school mates, neighbors, etc.) that are willing to help you undertake some of the tasks involved in the job search process. Hint: Now's the time to call in your IOUs! Make a list of all the people that might be willing to help you. Give each a call and ask them if they would help you with your job search. Stress that their job is NOT to find you employment, but to help you collect information or carry out certain tasks, such as:

Don't be afraid to ask for help, most people want to help and only need to know what type of help you need. If necessary, barter for services, or offer your help in return with a project a group member is about to tackle. Give each person specific assignments, and check in on each person regularly to keep everyone motivated and on target.

Use your support team to find local “job hunting clubs” that may exist in your area. These are informal groups of individuals, usually led by a professional career advisor, that meet together on a regular basis to support each other in finding employment. Join these clubs and tap into their resources!

After creating your Support Group, move on to Step 6.
