STEP 4 - PREPARE YOUR CAREER PORTFOLIO

In this step, your objective is to prepare and compile specific documents that you will need when contacting potential employers to inquire about employment, or that may be requested of you by employers who wish to consider you for employment. In a file, gather together the following:

1. Copies of your resume. Make sure it is up-to-date, professional looking, and contains all relevant information to your job search.

2. Business cards. In lieu of business cards, prepare standard 3x5 cards with your name and contact information, desired job titles, desired employer types, desired geographical location, and a description of your talent.

3. Sample letters of Inquiry, Application, Follow-up, and Acceptance, Rejection, and Thank you.

4. Copies of all work-related references.

5. Copies of all school and college transcripts.

6. Copies of all awards, honors, citations, and other similar accomplishments.

7. Copies of all certifications, diplomas, and degrees.

8. Copies of all media coverage.

9. A Contact log. A notebook where you can keep track of everyone you contact during your job search, their contact information, how they were of help (or what type of help they offered), and what they did for you and when.

Also include any other information that demonstrates your talent and experience, and, therefore, may be of interest to potential employers.
