The Easy 10 Step Job Hunting Guide

by James C. Gonyea

STEP 3 - DETERMINE YOUR JOB HUNTING OBJECTIVES

In this step, your objective is to convert what you know about your personality style into three job hunting objectives:

Directions for completing this step:

  1. Based upon what you know about yourself, especially your interests and skills, prepare a list of job titles that best describe your talent, or the kind of work that you want to secure.

If you experience difficulty in completing this step, I suggest you obtain a copy of a book called “The Occupational Outlook Handbook,” (sometimes referred to as the OOH), published by the U.S. Department of Labor. This book lists hundreds of job titles and their descriptions. By reviewing the index and the job descriptions, you should be able to identify job titles that match your personality. Note: you can gain access to the OOH data online via our website, at most public and college libraries, and at many bookstores.

  1. Next determine what type of employer or employers you want to work for. For example, do you prefer to work in a bank, school, law firm, hospital, factory, retail store, restaurant, etc.?
  1. Finally, determine where you want to work.  Do you have a preference for a particular city, state, region, or country?

Ideally, at this point in this program, you should be able to define your job search objectives in terms of a desired job title, type of employer, and location. Here's a few examples:

My job objective is to work as an Office Manager in a car dealership in Tampa, Florida.

My job objective is to work as a Substance Abuse Counselor in a Drug Rehab Center in the greater Boston, MA area.

My job objective is to work as Website Developer in a small commercial web development service in Los Angeles or San Francisco, CA.

Remember, it's possible to have several different job hunting objectives that you can pursue at the same time.

After defining your objectives, move on to Step 4.
