Career Focus 2000 Interest Inventory

About the Career Focus 2000 Program

DESCRIPTION

The CF2II is an online, interactive career interest inventory designed to help you assess your personal interests and identify matching occupations. The CF2II is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers -- only answers appropriate to you. The CF2II contains 180 inventory items -- statements about work-related tasks that have been drawn from 18 major occupational fields found in the American work scene. These 18 occupational fields together comprise more than 90% of all work performed in the United States. You will be asked to review each inventory item and then to select those items that are interesting or appealing that you feel you would enjoy doing.

RESULTS

The CF2II offers you an opportunity to survey the American work scene as a means of identifying work activities that you might want to undertake as a career. You will receive a personalized analysis report indicating the level of interest you scored in each of the 18 occupational fields, and a list of occupations that match your strongest interests. You will also have the option to print out your personalized report, as well as a step-by-step career guide that illustrates how to use the CF2II results to select a specific career goal and to develop a plan to reach your career goal. While the CF2II is an ideal starting point for exploring career options, it is recommended that you incorporate other information about yourself (skills, values, behavioral traits) into the decision-making system built into this program in order to identify occupations that best match your overall personality, not just your interests.

AUDIENCE

The CF2II is ideally suited for use by high school and college students, as well as adults who wish to identify career options related to their personal interests. The CF2II is appropriate for individuals making their first career decision, as well as adults facing a mid-life career change.

COMPLETION TIME

The CF2II is not a timed instrument. Most people can complete it in approximately 20 minutes. However, if you wish, you may stop at any time, save your answers and return at a later time to complete the inventory.

SUPPORTING REPORT MATERIALS

In addition to receiving a personalized report indicating your interest level for each of 18 occupational fields, you may also elect to print out any or all of the following reports:

Occupational Field Descriptions - detailed descriptions of each of the 18 occupational fields that form the basis of the CF2II.

Occupational Fields & Related Occupations - a list of occupations associated with each of the 18 occupational fields that form the basis of the CF2II.

Inventory Items & Related Occupations - specific occupations related to each of the 180 inventory items found in the CF2II.

How To Select a Career Direction - detailed advice regarding how to use the CF2II results to select a career direction, and how to develop a step-by-step plan to reach your new career goal.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

The CF2II was designed along the lines of a "trait-factor" instrument, where factors associated with occupations are used as the basis for identifying personal interests. The prime assumptions underlying the design of the CF2II are (a) a person's interests are the most important factor in career selection, and (b) selecting occupations related to one's interests is the most effective means of ensuring ultimate career satisfaction and success. Additional selection factors, such as skills, values, and behavioral traits -- also important in career selection -- are introduced into the career decision-making process via the supportive materials offered by the CF2II.

The inventory items and related occupations used in the CF2II are based upon research conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics as published in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2000-2001 Edition.

Reliability and validity normative data are not available. It is the author's opinion that reliability and validity normative data are not possible with a career interest inventory, as career interest patterns can not be based upon any standardized, objective data. However, in statistical studies conducted over the last 20 years on interest inventories similar in design and content to the CF2II as developed by the author, it has been shown that the reliability and validity coefficients of the author's instruments have been well within all acceptable standards.

SPONSORSHIP

The CF2II is a free service offered to the general public by Gonyea & Associates, Inc., the owner and host of the Internet Career Connection website. There is no fee of any kind to take the CF2II.
