Step 5 Checklist: Develop a career plan...
Career Selection and Planning
Guide
Internet Career Connection
If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.... David Campbell
Welcome to the last step in our program!
In this step, we will guide you in developing a step-by-step plan listing the decisions and tasks you believe should be taken, and in which order, for you to actually realize your new career goal. Developing a plan - or map - is as important to your ultimate career success as was the decision regarding which career direction to pursue. Many career seekers have failed to reach their career goals simply because they did not develop a career plan, or their plan was incomplete or inaccurate.
Time required to complete...
Approximately 1 hour.

Please print a copy of Form 3 and use your printed copy to record your findings as you complete this step.

[ ] Identify the steps you think
you need to take.
On your printed copy of Form 3, review the list of common career planning decisions and tasks.
Check those decisions and tasks that you should do in order to reach your career goal.
List any additional decisions and tasks that should be undertaken, but are not currently listed on the form. Use the "Other" category to list these items.

|
In order to complete this step, it may be necessary for you to first revisit the Occupational Outlook Handbook website and the profile of your career goal to understand what decisions and tasks should be undertaken. |
[ ] Arrange your checked steps in
order of completion.
On your printed copy of Form 3, review the decisions and tasks that you checked above.
In the "Completion order" column, place a number one (1) to the right of the checked decision or task that you must do first.
Continue numbering items from (2) onwards until you have numbered all the checked decisions and tasks in their order of completion.
[ ] Assign a starting and ending date to each checked step.
Under the "Timeline" column, enter a starting and ending date (if known or applicable) for each of the checked decisions and tasks.
[ ] Identify obstacles and
resources.
For each of the decisions and tasks that you have checked, enter any known obstacles that you anticipate you will encounter when attempting to complete that item, and any resource (if known) that you could call upon to resolve the obstacle.
[ ] Have
your plan professionally reviewed before taking action.
Considering that the average individual is not trained or skilled in developing career plans, it is strongly recommended that you have your plan reviewed by a professional career counselor to ensure that it is complete and accurate. Please refer to our Support page for advice regarding how to obtain career guidance.
[ ] Put your plan into action!
According to an old saying, "The journey of a thousand miles, begins with the first step." Put your plan into action by completing step 1. Then motivate and dedicate yourself to completing your entire plan. By doing so, you will increase your chances of successfully reaching your new career goal.
